Full-time PGCE Primary
There are three ‘phases’ of training and prior to each placement, you will attend University for training sessions, covering important subject and pedagogical knowledge to prepare you for teaching a class.
In the Introductory phase (from September to December), you will attend sessions at University before undertaking your first placement from October to December.
The Developing phase (from January-April) consists of around three weeks attending University sessions before your second placement commences from the end of January to April.
Finally, the Extending phase of training takes place from April - July, with the final placement finishing at the end of June, usually back in the same school as your Introductory placement. In addition, trainees will undertake 20 days of Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) experiences, to consider foundational aspects of teaching practice (such as strategies to address low-level disruption in the classroom).
Part-Time PGCE Primary
On this route, you will undertake three placements over two years. In the first year, you will undertake the ‘Introductory placement’ with 2 consecutive days a week spent on placement, leading to a 6-week block (5 days a week) which usually takes place after Easter. In the second academic year, there will be two more placements following a similar structure whereby you are in school for 2 consecutive days a week, leading to a longer 6-week block in each.
This course is delivered via blended learning with training usually taking place on a Friday. You will attend campus for some in person sessions (usually 6 sessions in each academic year delivered on campus), and the remainder of the taught content will be delivered through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous sessions as well as independent study, to allow flexibility.
